Our Halls of Change

What are Degrassi’s Halls of Change? We all transform throughout our lives, so Degrassi, along with the local charity group The Abramson Angels, created our Halls of Change.

These outdoor halls are open to the public when school is not in session. They are covered outside and in with inspirational murals and have many resting spots and openings into our outdoor classroom areas and the stepped herb gardens. The gardens serve our school cafeteria and our community.

Come and see them!

If you have services you’d like to donate to our school for community use, please contact our Front Office.

About our Classes

Degrassi is a well utilized school. Our capacity is 800 students and we are regularly at capacity. We have 400 grade 7&8 students annually, approximately 50 students per grade K-6 which gives us about 2 classes per grade, depending on the year. We employ split classes and have one JK and one Grade 6 half-classes for children who require more involved support or individual attention. Through the split classes, we have 3 EAs per classroom to support those students. This gives those students an easier transition into school, and then later into their senior public school years.

About our School

Our school building has many attractive learning spaces – large double classrooms, a fine arts room and a large gymnasium. Each of our classrooms has a smart board in it and many of them have guided reading spaces to support literacy development.

The modernized learning commons (library) is in the middle of the school with a technology lab, a portable smart board, fiction and non-fiction print resources, a cozy class reading nook, small spaces for individual student work and a break out space for small group work.

About our Community

Cambridge is a culturally rich community with many libraries, public spaces, parks and excellent transit!

Our families speak, at last count, 56 different languages! When we do our personal histories in Grade 2, we discover family histories in Canada from last week to four hundred years ago. Our annual “Family Meals” fundraiser is very well attended. We often have dozens of traditional meals from around the world to share, featuring hundreds of different flavours. It’s a wonderful time to discover what we have in common as well as celebrate our variety and differences!

If you’re moving here from out of the area or country, please contact the City of Cambridge for a welcome package that will help you get oriented.

Our History

Degrassi first opened its doors in 1979 and soon grew into the thriving K-8 school it is today. The K-6 wing of Degrassi was built in 1987 to afford our 7&8 Senior Public Students more space to prepare for the rigours of high school. We are a feeder school for Glenbrook North Secondary School, and accept grade 7&8 students from four K-6 schools.

In 1998, we began construction on our Halls of Change and stepped herb gardens. They are continually changing and growing, but the main construction was completed early in 2002.
